Wanaka Part1: The drive to Wanaka
March 28
Today had a LOT of pictures and a lot going on so I thought it might be better to split it into two. This is not helping me on catching up. I’ve accepted that I will never catch up. Anyhow, this is one of my favorite days on the trip so far, so enjoy. Also, on the way there, I only used my iPhone so most of these images are slightly lower resolution but I still like them.
The weather is a bit gloomy today. There is a light drizzle coming down as the sun rises. These morning walks in shorts to the showers when it is a bit chilly and raining will definitely wake you up. I prep the van, clean up a bit, and the girls show up with their gear (for the record I did offer to pick them up). We load up and are on our way. Crampervan tours is now in business. I don’t know how two girls were so quick to trust me and my crampervan, perhaps it is the super dork Steve Irwin outfits. We make our way towards Wanaka and come across some steep roads as we ascend up a mountain. Apparently they don’t allow busses on here due to the tight turns (zig zagging up the mountain) and steep grades of the road. You can tell the girls get a bit nervous on some of the turns as the Negotiator reaches for the “oh shit” handle from time to time as we approach some turns a bit on the fast end for a campervan (slow for any other vehicle). We make it to the top and the views are awesome. It is still drizzling a bit but the skies show some openings. We find a viewing spot and decide to stop and take in the sights. The viewing point is great. And to top it off, due to the rain, we also caught a rainbow next to the mountain. The girls are excited and claim this is one of the best views they’ve seen on their trip so far. You don’t get stops like this riding the bus; Crampervan tours is off to a great start. We walk out on one of the mountain paths and get some really neat views and photographs. CG has noticed that I don’t like taking pictures of myself, but takes my camera and forces me to pose for some pictures; I grumpily oblige. I felt like a kid who’s mother was forcing them to pose for pictures on a vacation. Don’t worry, I won’t be posting these pictures to the website. We move on and make the rest of our trip to Wanaka, where we stop off at the hostel they were able to get a reservation at. The Belgian also made it up to Wanaka and she meets us there to join on the hike; the more the merrier. We make a quick trip to the grocery store, called New World, and buy our snacks for the hike.
